Our Activities

Activities of Sky trackers and Astronomy researchers club, Bhopal

Sky trackers and Astronomy Researchers Club conducts various activities to make hobbyist and enthusiasts fully aware about Astronomy. From activities, we refer to public mobilization towards Cosmos. Astronomy is a branch which certainly needs numerous functions to work upon. From telescope handling to telescope training and information about Cosmos and other sciences.

Following are the activities carried out by Sky trackers and Astronomy researchers club : -

  1. Lectures on Astronomy : - Lecture series are Conducted for students of age group 12 to 27, who want to know the details about working of cosmos and the Universe. The Lecture series on astronomy includes the following topics :-
  • Astronomy Origin - from the earliest Astronomers to present day Astronomy
  • Leaping into the Cosmos - From Planet Earth to Solar system
  • Members of Solar system (detailed study on each planet)
  • Galaxies, types of galaxies, their position in space, Doppler effect, Hubble constant
  • Black holes and Time travel (small Idea and Intro)
  • Expanding Universe - fate of Universe
  • Radio and Gamma ray Astronomy
  • Details on deep skies astronomy
  • Particle Physics and Modern Physics (Nuclear Physics, Quantum Physics and Solid state Physics).
No club in the entire country offer lectures and a certificate course on Astronomy and Astrophysics for students in elementary and senior secondary school. That's how we differ from other. Value addition to a novice forms the crux of our ideology.

     2.  Lectures of Astrophysics and Particle Physics - Covering all important topics like String theory and the Einstein's relativity. From high energy Higg's boson to gamma ray pair production, each and every high level topic is being taught at Sky trackers and Astronomy researchers club Bhopal.

       3.  Telescope Observation -

High quality Telescopes like 125 mm and 150 mm Star trackers, Dobsonian and Orion Telescopes are used for detailed Observation of Planets, stars, Nebulae, galaxies, Rings of the Saturn and Belt of Jupiter. The members and students of Sky trackers and Astronomy researchers club are given full Telescope training on as to how they can observe various details and plot the various objects in the sky. Members are expected to make careful utilization of telescope as these are highly sensitive optical aid. All the messier objects are shown via telescopes..

These are some of the Telescopes used in Sky trackers and Astronomy Researchers club :-

Starting from Left to right is : -

. Sky Trackers system :- One of the finest range of Astronomical Telescopes in India, known with the tag of Indian telescopes.
Telescopes of Range 125 mm to 200 mm are used in Sky trackers and Astronomy Researchers club Bhopal, which give easy viewing of the Jupiter belts and the rings of Saturn. Followed by messier objects in deep sky . Sky trackers are best preferred in Astronomical clubs in India.

. Orion system  :- Considered as best International brand, especially in the category of Dobsonian, is the Orion telescope system. Orion is in itself one of the most preferred and extensively used Telescope around the globe. We are proud to have such telescope in our club as it provides great flexibility in observational Astronomy.

. Dobsonian Telescopes :- These range of telescopes probably don't require much introduction. This international brand of telescope, having an aperture +8" has an excellent light gathering power. With its easy to rotate Dob mount, you just need to give a slow push to the telescope and then you see it's smooth rotational abilities. Best aperture to provide best light gathering power. Dobsonian is certainly best mounted International brand, even in terms of Astro-photography (other than Equatorial mounts) and easy to use operation.

4.  Astrophotography :-  Photographing deep skies Objects like M42 - 43, and the belts of Jupiter has been one of the most interesting and practiced hobby for astronomers around the globe. Taking out the camera , knowing its specification, aligning it with your telescope and photographing the eternal Universe is one of the most complex part of Observational astronomy. Most digital single-lens reflex cameras (digital SLR or DSLR) are digital cameras that use a mechanical mirror system and pentaprism to direct light from the lens to an optical viewfinder on the back of the camera are used for astrophotography.
Students of Sky trackers and Astronomy Reserachers club are allowed to bring their own Digital camera's for Astrophotography as our club wont provide any. A camera with 9+ megapixels would be suitable and the brand namely Sony, canon or Nikon are best suited with Astrophotography. Though it is one of the most difficult part in Observational astronomy when you carry it out with faint messier objects, alot practise and patience will make the work easier.

6. Messier Hunting and Constellations Lessons :- Students are given training so that they can point out any constellation or planet at any point of time. Messier hunting is taught for well and detailed Observational astronomy Idea. Star balls, Star dials and planispheres are used by the students to get a better understanding of skies around them.

7. Messier marathon and and sky parties :- Messier marathon is an event conducted in astronomy clubs where students wake up whole night and plot various messier objects. Member with maximum number of messier objects plotted and observed, wins this marathon. It is then followed by Star parties, where discussions on astronomical topics are being done by students under one roof of global astronomy. Along with refreshments and stuffs.

8. Laser shows :- Lasers are used for detailed explanation of Stars position and Constellations patterns figuring. Students are not given lasers as these are highly dangerous, and are vulnerable to accidents. They are just showcased in the events. Special permissions for laser usage has been taken by Sky trackers and astronomy researchers club.

9. Solar Observation campaigns :-  Special Campaigns for Observation of Sol ( Sun ) are conducted at Sky trackers and Astronomy researchers club, Bhopal. Special care is taken with solar observation. High quality Particle physics specialized Solar badder filters are used to provide complete 101 % safety during sun spots or solar eclipse Observation.

10. Overnight camps :- Interested students put up the camp during night at various locations to observe the ever changing night sky and get thorough with telescope training and sky mapping. Special astrosketching session are carried out during this point of time. These camps are an aid for better understanding of the ancestral astronomy, where students get a feel of what early astronomers might have seen. These camps also make students self dependent and more responsible towards vulnerable conditions of night skies.
* Students and members are kindly requested to being following items during overnight campaigns : -

  • Warm clothes and blankets
  • Torch or flashlight with red translucent paper on its projecting end.
  • water bottles and snacks
  • Star dials or sky maps.
  • Astro sketching board or those provided by Sky trackers and astronomy researchers club.
